When Jaya Bachchan revealed that she initially opposed Amitabh Bachchan hosting KBC

Amitabh Bachchan is undoubtedly the Shehenshah of Bollywood and is cherished in the TV industry for sitting in the iconic host seat of India’s one of the most watched shows ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati‘ (KBC) becoming a bankable actor. But in the late 1990s, the ‘Sholay’ star faced a significant downturn in his career, struggling to find good roles in films and grappling with severe financial difficulties.
Throwback to the time when during this challenging period, his wife, Jaya Bachchan, was initially sceptical about his decision to host a television game show. In an old interview with ace fashion designer duo, Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla, Jaya expressed concerns about Amitabh’s move to television, fearing it might diminish his stature as a film star. However, she later supported him through this tough phase. Despite her initial reservations, she stood by him during his turbulent time.
At that time, Amitabh’s production company had gone bankrupt, leaving him with debts amounting to Rs 90 crore. Creditors were constantly at his door, and he was on the verge of losing his home. In an old interview, he admitted that he agreed to host KBC primarily due to the financial incentives it offered. The show’s concept appealed to him, and the payment helped him make the decision to step into television. When KBC premiered in 2000, it became a massive hit and marked a turning point in Amitabh’s career. The show not only renewed his public image but also brought him back into the limelight as one of India’s most beloved television hosts. He again established a connect with the contestants and audiences making him an exceptional host.
Previously seen in the mega-blockbuster ‘Kalki 2898 AD’, he is now seen on the big screens in the Rajnikanth starrer ‘Vettaiyan’. The legendary actors are sharing the screen almost after three decades.
